Histories
Thursday, December 25, 2008 @ 12:01 AM The History of Christmas In the Western world, the birthday of Jesus Christ has been celebrated on December 25th since AD 354, replacing an earlier date of January 6th. The Christians had by then appropriated many pagan festivals and traditions of the season, that were practiced in many parts of the Middle East and Europe, as a means of stamping them out. There were mid-winter festivals in ancient Babylon and Egypt, and Germanic fertility festivals also took place at this time. The birth of the ancient sun-god Attis in Phrygia was celebrated on December 25th, as was the birth of the Persian sun-god, Mithras. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia, a festival dedicated to Saturn, the god of peace and plenty, that ran from the 17th to 24th of December. Public gathering places were decorated with flowers, gifts and candles were exchanged and the population, slaves and masters alike, celebrated the occasion with great enthusiasm. In Scandinavia, a period of festivities known as Yule contributed another impetus to celebration, as opposed to spirituality. As Winter ended the growing season, the opportunity of enjoying the Summer's bounty encouraged much feasting and merriment. The Celtic culture of the British Isles revered all green plants, but particularly mistletoe and holly. These were important symbols of fertility and were used for decorating their homes and altars. New Christmas customs appeared in the Middle Ages. The most prominent contribution was the carol, which by the 14th century had become associated with the religious observance of the birth of Christ. In Italy, a tradition developed for re-enacting the birth of Christ and the construction of scenes of the nativity. This is said to have been introduced by Saint Francis as part of his efforts to bring spiritual knowledge to the laity. Saints Days have also contributed to our Christmas celebrations. A prominent figure in today's Christmas is Saint Nicholas who for centuries has been honored on December 6th. He was one of the forerunners of Santa Claus. Another popular ritual was the burning of the Yule Log, which is strongly embedded in the pagan worship of vegetation and fire, as well as being associated with magical and spiritual powers. Celebrating Christmas has been controversial since its inception. Since numerous festivities found their roots in pagan practices, they were greatly frowned upon by conservatives within the Church. The feasting, gift-giving and frequent excesses presented a drastic contrast with the simplicity of the Nativity, and many people throughout the centuries and into the present, condemn such practices as being contrary to the true spirit of Christmas. The earliest English reference to December 25th as Christmas Day did not come until 1043. The Birth of Jesus In the Western world the birthday of Jesus Christ has been celebrated on December 25th since AD 354, partly to replace the pagan worship that was commonplace in those days. However, we can be fairly sure that Jesus wasn't actually born on that date. The Bible tells us that shepherds were staying out in the fields overnight when Jesus was born (Luke 2:8), but in that part of the world it would have been far too cold at night to do so in December. What is more likely is that He was born in the Spring, perhaps between March and May. Whatever the time of year, it is virtually impossible to identify the actual date. This situation is further complicated by the fact that the Christian scholar Dionysius Exiguus was asked by the Pope in AD 525 to calculate new cycles for fixing the date of Easter. However, he decided to base his calculations on the date of Jesus's birth. Unfortunately, it wasn't discovered until the 9th century that he got it badly wrong, by which time it was too late to change the calendar. He fixed the birth in the year 1 BC or AD 1 (Historians apparently can't agree which.) and began counting from the latter. But both earlier and later scholars agreed that Jesus was born at an earlier date. Indeed, it was eventually established that Herod the Great died in Spring of 4 BC. If Jesus had been born at the start of AD 1, as we currently have it, then Jesus would have been born some 4 or 5 years after Herod died. There is no way of accurately establishing the actual date of his birth, but it is most likely to have been between 5 and 6 BC. The important thing is that he was born, and his nominal birth date of December 25th seems as good as any to celebrate his birth and his message. It also a wonderful catalyst for enjoying the precious and simple pleasures of being, if only for a brief time, close together in the warm familiarity of friends and family, renewing relationships and sharing memories. Shopping for Christmas
Wednesday, December 24, 2008 @ 1:38 PM On Monday, 22 December, my Dad gave me money to go shopping. Went to Sg.Wang to shop for Christmas clothing ! My mom fetch me to Time Square at 2pm but i need to wait for Kenneth to reach. You're LATE ! Stupid jam XD After he had reached, we walk to Time Square's F.O.S but the choice there wasn't much. She's one of my closes cousin and i kinda miss her when she's not in Malaysia. She's just a little older than me, about four month? XD
She came on the 12 of December and she was staying at my cousin's house, Kelvin. When she arrived, i went to Kelvin's house but at that time Jonathan told me that she was sleeping like a PIG ! So, i waiting for her to wake up by staring at the television watching my cousins and his friends playing PlayStation 2. I tried to download MapleStory in Kelvin's computer but his little brother, Kenneth was playing Dota or something. He wouldn't let me use ! BAD BOY ~ On the 18th of December which is last Thursday i went out with my cousins, Laura, Jonathan and Kelvin. We went to Pavilion to watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua ! Once we've reached Pavilion, we went to the cinema to buy tickets. After that, we went to Subway to see Jonathan eat his beloved food ! Then, we went to J-Co Donuts. Bought 4 donuts and i forgot what's the name of it. Half an hour before the movie starts, we went to Pavilion's supermarket and i don't know what's the name of it again ! Wanted to look for some junk foods and mineral water but we wouldn't look for Junk Foods ! Suddenly Jonathan was missing and we didn't care about him because we were busing looking for PotatoChips ! Few minutes later, Jonathan POP OUT holding a big packet of Twisties. We asked him where did he get it and he told us the place. Stupid Jonathan ! At 3.35pm we went into the cinema to watch our hilarious movie ! Eating 2 large packet of Twisties and 1 large packet of Chipster and we can't finish it. What a waste ! The movie ended at 5pm, i guess. After the movies, me and Laura headed to KFC to have our lunch or dinner. Then, both of us went to Miss Whatever to buy some gifts for Laura's friends. Left Pavilion around 7pm and all of us was rushing home because me and Jonathan had to go to church for Christmas practice which starts at 8pm. Unfortunaly, we reached church at 8.30pm. Felt bad to me late ! Sorry. I guess this is the end of the day. Laura went back to Singapore on 19th of December but before that we went to somewhere to have Dim Sum ! Yummy, nice prawns. XD 19th of December at night, went to KLBC for Adore Concert and it was great ! I love the cow in that Goodiie Bag ! It's cute. = ] Sad-less Day or Sad-ness Day?

Wishing the day would pass faster especially yesterday and today. Kinda sad since yesterday morning until this morning ! But i felt better around 11 something. A special thanks to JiarWen and my buddies, thanks for cheering me up ! =) Don't really know how to express my feelings. Going to church with a moody face and making my friends worried about me. Sorry guys ! x( This morning i felt tired is because i couldn't sleep last night until 3am. When i woke up, looked in the mirror first thing in the morning and i saw one "Panda" in the mirror. Started to remember everything that we've talk about. Wondering do you still love me? Why are you treating me like this and why you said those things to me. Normally you don't treat me like this and i was hopping the argument would just end but it couldn't stop. This made me really tired, stress and hurt. I really hope this problem won't happen again. But no matter what happens, I'll still love you the way you are and my love to you would never ever change. If i has to choose between loving you and breathing. I would use my last breath to say I LOVE YOU. ![]() P/S: JiarWen, thank you very much ! I'm happy now, don't need to worry about me. If you have any problems, you can find me too.
